In fall 2006 Scenic Nevada will select and publicize the first list of Nevada LAST CHANCE Scenic Places. The list will spotlight the challenges facing our state regarding the protection of significant landscapes or places as well as offer potential solutions.

What is a Nevada LAST CHANCE Scenic Place?

An endangered scenic place can be almost any place of beauty or distinctive character that is in danger of being permanently lost, such as a scenic vista, a swath of productive farmland, a river corridor, a historic urban neighborhood or a village center. It could be a special setting that is locally treasured for its natural beauty or distinctive character.

An endangered scenic place also faces some kind of threat: residential sprawl, a commercial strip-mall invasion, homogeneous franchises, billboard blight, a new highway, inappropriately sited cell towers, insensitive ridgeline, drainageway and hillside developments or other changes that could transform the landscape and destroy its scenic beauty.

A last chance scenic place must have a potential solution, such as, "If we could do X, we could save this beautiful place, now and for future generations."

Why Nominate a Nevada LAST CHANCE Scenic Place?

Scenic Nevada will develop and distribute individualized press releases for each of Nevadas LAST CHANCE Scenic Places and will publicly announce the list at a news conference in fall 2006.

Nevadas LAST CHANCE Scenic Places will be published in a booklet, showcasing the states most beautiful and most at-risk sites. This memorable edition will be distributed statewide to the media, state legislators, local governments, county and city planners and others.

As a handy reference for public offcials and a distinctive book for your home, the Nevada Last Chance Scenic Places publication will be consulted for years to come. Information and photos of Nevadas LAST CHANCE Scenic Places will also be publicized on this Web site.
