Chairman Receives
Golden Pinecone Award

Environmental Leadership awarded Doug Smith, Chairman, Board of Directors, Scenic Nevada a Golden Pinecone Award in the Individual Category at the 2004 annual event held to give recognition for environmental excellence and achievement in Northern Nevada.

Individuals are honored for their commitment to environmental issues in our community, their efforts, and their impact. The text of the nomination made by Barbara Woodward-Rainey of Northern Nevada Dark Sky Association is as follows:

" I would like to nominate Doug Smith of Scenic Nevada as an individual because of his tireless efforts on behalf of Scenic Nevada. Doug first came into my world in 2000 as part of Citizens for a Scenic Reno, when we were both involved with the fight to stop the proliferation of billboards in our area. This was, and still is, a long uphill battle that has devoured hundreds of hours of Doug's personal time. Over time, Scenic Nevada matured into Citizens for a Scenic Northern Nevada, and finally in 2002, Scenic Nevada. Throughout all, Doug Smith has been the guiding force.

Scenic Nevada is now involved in many environmental causes, all of which are outlined on the website at www.scenicnevada.org. Scenic Nevada, with Doug Smith as Chairman, has recently produced a 25 minute documentary about Northern Nevada that is available for viewing by nion-profit groups. (More information about the documentary is available on the website.) Doug has worked non-stop for the betterment of our community as an unpaid crusader for all things beautiful."
